Our History
Two IT professionals bonded during long hours in a high-stakes project release “war room.” Between breaks, they discovered a shared love for birdwatching and photography. After leaving their husbands at home and attending their first birding festival, they noticed a challenge: birders lacked a retailer that truly met their needs. While tracking a Chuck-will’s-widow deep in the trees, inspiration struck. The Nerdy Birder was born—a website created by bird lovers, for bird lovers.
Beth Wu
Beth, the original “Nerdy Birder,” blends her passions for technology, science, and nature to capture stunning, awe-inspiring moments of wildlife. Her artistic approach to photography showcases the beauty of the natural world in ways that leave viewers breathless.
As an experienced IT professional, Beth leverages cutting-edge tools to scout for rare birds, document new discoveries, and share them with the birding community. Beyond her technical expertise, she plays the crucial role of navigator, ensuring that every adventure ends safely with everyone making it back from the trail intact.
Michelle Rowand
Michelle, known as the “Rowdiest of the Nerdy Birders,” brings boundless energy and passion to every birding adventure, often losing herself (and sometimes the trail!) in pursuit of the perfect sighting to capture the best photo.
Her enthusiasm extends to growing the business, where she thrives on creating fun, unique items that fellow birders will love. Whether designing products she’d want to wear or use on her own birding journeys, Michelle’s creativity and dedication help shape the vibrant spirit of our brand.
Maria & Scott Crowder
As the vision grew, so did the need for more assistance. To bring The Nerdy Birder to life, they recruited two fellow tech-savvy friends—one with an artistic flair and the other with a strategic finesse for finance to keep the business soaring.
With this well-rounded team, The Nerdy Birder evolved from an idea into a thriving community where bird lovers can find the gear and resources they need to fuel their passion
